What is Topical Authority in SEO?

What is Topical Authority in SEO

Topical authority means knowledge and reliability about a specific subject. Despite this explanation, many of my clients did not know what topical authority is in SEO and how to build it step by step. I have been building topical authority for client sites since my early days of SEO, even when it was not a big deal. Therefore, I will explain every dot and dash about topical authority in this short guide.

What is Topical Authority?

A topical authority is depthful knowledge of a topic that has search intent on Google. It can signify your website’s expertise in a particular subject. A website can build topical authority by consistently publishing high-quality, in-depth content on your chosen niche.

For example—Sprout Social demonstrates topical authority in social media marketing by covering a broad range of related topics on its blog, from branding to community management. Also, VISER X publishes posts and videos about SEO tips in a series.

Importance of Topical Authority

As you know, the demand for SEO for business in Bangladesh is increasing rapidly. But basic keywords and backlinking are not enough for website ranking nowadays. Instead, Google ranks websites based on their topical authority, meaning how well they demonstrate expertise in a specific subject.

You can strengthen this authority by creating a network of interconnected content pieces around a central theme. For instance—internal links within your website enhance both user experience and Google’s ability to understand your site’s structure.

How Does Topical Authority Work?

The latest Google core updates prioritize website content with high topical authority in order to rank them higher in search results for relevant queries. It reflects your site’s E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.

Blackship Creative mentioned in their article about SEO that 75% of users don’t go past the first page of Google results. So, ranking landing pages is the first priority of a business owner, and they must rely on topical authority to secure it.

How Google Evolved Topical Authority into Website Content over the Years?

  • The Hummingbird Update in 2013: It expanded the relevancy to a searcher’s query.
  • The Helpful Content Update in 2023: it prioritized people-friendly content to remove generic keyword-stuffed content.
  • Helpful Content Ranking System Integration in 2024: It strengthened Google’s evaluation of your site’s helpfulness

How to Build Topical Authority?

To build topical authority, you need to define a niche, research it, create in-depth content, and do high-quality page SEO. Your website and blog content will only rank afterward. If you follow the proper SEO steps, from defining a niche to analyzing reports, you will rank in a very short period.

Step 1: Define Your Niche

First, you have to choose a specific topic. Focus on a niche where you have expertise or passion. Then, break down your main topic into smaller, more manageable subtopics. Following the steps will help you create a framework for your content strategy.

Usually, there is a dedicated SEO project manager who looks up the niche related to the valuable keywords. So, if your business requires a person, you have to hire that person. Otherwise, you should take SEO services from prominent digital marketing agencies.

Step 2: Conduct Deep Research

Use the best keyword and SEO research tools to find primary and LSI keywords related to your niche and subtopics. Consider long-tail keywords, as they are more specific and often have less competition. What you have to do is understand what users are looking for when they search for specific keywords.

But do not get limited to long tail keywords as it has low competency and a high success rate. People tend to type short keywords to look for anything. Research how the results are, and prepare your content plan for a better version among all the contents on the first page of search results.

Step 3: Create In-Depth Content

Create comprehensive, in-depth articles or guides that cover your main topics. It’s like more focused articles that support your pillar content and dive deeper into specific subtopics. In the content, use relevant keywords naturally throughout your content, including titles, headings, and image alt text.

Step 4: Build a Strong Internal Linking Structure

Create a spider of internal links that connect your pillar content to your cluster content and vice versa. And, of course, do not forget to use keywords in your anchor text to signal to search engines the relevance of the linked page.

Besides, you can put some external links as I used in this blog. Google likes it when you refer to credible website content without putting their links intentionally, like paid backlinks.

Step 5: Earn High-Quality Backlinks

Produce valuable content that other websites will want to link to use as a reference, such as infographics, data studies, or original research. Also, you can reach out to other websites and influencers in your niche to build relationships and earn backlinks.

Step 6: Establish Your Expertise

Become a thought leader! That means sharing your knowledge through guest blogging, speaking engagements, or social media. By doing this, there will be opportunities to collaborate with other experts in your field.

Always seek opportunities to be quoted or featured in articles and interviews. Try to get featured in industry publications to add your EEAT. The review sites and research sites have dedicated value to the search engines.

Step 7: Monitor and Analyze Your Results

Use Google Analytics and other tools to track your website’s traffic, rankings, and other key metrics. See what your competitors are doing to build topical authority and identify areas for improvement. Plus, regularly update and refresh your content to maintain your topical authority.

Final Thoughts

The value of SEO is unimaginable in this digital era. So, making a topical authority must meet the 7 steps we have described. It may require some time to kick in, but you must get results at the end of your SEO-optimized content.
